Eating together as a family is a very important part of Lastovo diet. What we eat is as important as how we eat. So, we make our meals a real stress relief by getting surrounded with friends and family. That is why this way of eating encourages relaxation and stress relief. There is even some wine, both red and white, included occasionally at the end of the day as a part of a relaxation ritual. By now, everybody knows that a glass of wine a day keeps the doctor away!
Lastovo diet is based on a very simple principle: we eat as much locally produced food as we can. This food is prepared in the way that it comes as close to its natural form as possible. In other words, we eat “real food” that is unprocessed, or at least minimally processed or refined. Everything on the plate is locally grown or caught and served fresh, from vegetables and fruits to meat and fish.
You might think that the food options on Lastovo would be limited, it being a small island, but you would be far from the truth and the table, which is filled with fresh and seasonal vegetable and fruit, whole grains, legumes, fresh sea fish, grass-fed lamb, goat and poultry, local dairy products, olive oil, nuts, seeds, herbs and spices…
